This album features the three opuses of piano music published during Strauss's lifetime: the Five Pieces for Piano, op. 3, Piano Sonata in B minor, op. 5, and Stimmungsbilder (Mood Pictures), op. 9. Also included in the album is my solo piano transcription of Strauss's song 'Zueignung', op. 10 no. 1. Strauss wrote all of these works at a young age: he was sixteen when he completed op. 3 and op. 5, and nineteen when he finished op. 9. They show musical influences ranging from Beethoven to Mendelssohn, Schubert, Brahms, and Liszt. The album paints a fascinating picture of a composer 'in the making', and features works that are rarely heard.
